Communities in Pabbo Sub-county, Amuru District, have been urged to construct latrines in their homes to improve sanitation and curb the spread of diseases such as cholera.
Walter Okello Atube, in charge of Pabbo Health Centre III, made the appeal on Monday during a community meeting organised by the Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) under the EU-funded Youth Action for Transparency project.
Okello noted that, due to poor latrine coverage, many residents rely on shared facilities at the health centre and sub-county headquarters, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks. He warned that open defecation continues to pose serious public health risks in the area.
Paska Akello, the LCIII councillor for Kal Parish, echoed the call, urging communities to prioritise sanitation by constructing latrines, rubbish pits, and bathing shelters.
FOWODE’s programme officer, Alfred Oneki, commended local leaders for actively involving the community in efforts to improve sanitation.
Meanwhile, Amuru District continues to battle a cholera outbreak, particularly in Elegu Town. Attempts to reach the District Health Officer for comment were unsuccessful.
