GULU CITY — Gulu City Mayor Alfred Okwonga and Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Aol Betty Ocan have called on residents to take an active role in protecting the environment, warning that failure to act could endanger future generations.
Speaking during a community dialogue on Gender-Based Violence and Environmental Protection at Kaunda Grounds on Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Okwonga reaffirmed the city’s commitment to conservation.
He said Gulu City is doing everything possible to safeguard the environment including planting more trees, conserving existing ones, and promoting proper waste management.
Mayor Okwonga urged residents to separate waste, ease recycling, and avoid encroaching on wetlands, emphasizing that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility.
“We must all work together to safeguard our environment,” he said.
Hon. Aol Betty Ocan echoed the mayor’s remarks, urging communities to increase awareness and participation in environmental protection initiatives. She applauded Gulu residents for their strong community spirit and called for continued collaboration to preserve the city’s natural beauty and promote sustainability.
Both leaders encouraged schools, local organizations, and residents to take part in tree-planting and waste management campaigns, noting that environmental protection is vital for Gulu’s future development.
Meanwhile, Dr. Collins Okello, Dean of the Faculty of Environment at Gulu University, appealed to the public to stop cutting trees for charcoal, warning that the practice has severe impacts on the environment.
