The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) Gulu branch has recorded a sharp rise in new cancer cases this year, registering 800 patients compared to 428 last year a 100 percent increase.
Dr. Fhadil Geriga, head of the UCI Gulu branch, revealed the figures during a press briefing on Thursday, attributing the rise to greater public awareness and improved access to cancer care services in the region.
He noted that cervical cancer remains the most common type, especially among women, and emphasized that it can be prevented through early vaccination. Dr. Geriga added that the increase in reported cases is a positive sign, showing that more people are seeking early diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Henry Dabanza, also from UCI Gulu, highlighted a rise in breast cancer cases, saying many women still delay check-ups and treatment.
The institute continues to promote early screening, vaccination, and community outreach as key measures to curb the growing cancer burden in Northern Uganda.
