Excitement filled the air at Speak FM in Gulu City as the station dedicated its entire programming lineup to women in celebration of International Women’s Day, marking a landmark initiative to promote gender equality and recognize women’s contributions in society.
The special broadcast, dubbed “Women’s Special Day,” ran throughout the day, with women taking full charge of on-air activities including program presentation and news anchoring in both Luo and English.
In a unique highlight of the day, Betty Aol Ocan stepped into the Speak FM newsroom and anchored the English news bulletin, making her one of the key female leaders to take part in the station’s special programming. She was joined by Jackline Akello, who also participated in anchoring the day’s news bulletins.
The broadcast further featured a vibrant mix of voices from the music and digital spaces, including musicians Liama, Pretty B, Pam Peace, Pamela, and Janneth Prisca. Social media personalities such as Simple Gladys, Min Tuke, Otangalo (Alimocan Stella), and Bella Baby also participated in the special programming.

Speaking to reporters, Betty Aol Ocan applauded Speak FM’s management for recognizing women’s contributions to society and emphasized that women are equally capable as men.
Social media influencer and politician Alimocan Stella, popularly known as Otangalo, also praised the station for respecting and uplifting the female gender through the initiative.
Adding to the call for inclusivity, TikToker Min Tuke encouraged the station to make such invitations a regular occurrence to help women demonstrate their potential to the world.
Speak FM Station Manager Daniel Omuge aka Danmix, commended the participants for their professionalism and energy throughout the day. He noted that the initiative was a tribute to the hardworking women in the community.

He added that Speak FM was established to help fulfil the objectives of the Forum for Women in Democracy by amplifying the voices of women. He noted that this is why the station finds it important to give women extensive space on air, especially during the celebration of International Women’s Day.

This year’s celebrations align with the 2026 global theme for International Women’s Day, “Give to Gain,” which promotes generosity and shared responsibility, emphasizing that supporting women through mentorship and visibility creates lasting benefits for the entire community.
