Medical professionals in Gulu have issued a stern warning to expectant mothers regarding the dangers of using herbal remedies, citing severe risks to both maternal and fetal health.
Speaking at a press conference at Gulu City Yard on Tuesday, Dr. Pebalo Francis, an obstetrician-gynecologist and lecturer at Gulu University, emphasized that pregnancy is a highly sensitive period. He noted that the early stages are particularly critical as the fetus’s vital organs are forming.
Dr. Pebalo clarified that the “natural” label on herbal medicine does not equal safety. He warned that these substances can trigger premature uterine contractions or cause direct harm to the developing baby. He also touched on the dangers of unsafe abortions, noting they are life-threatening unless performed by professionals for legitimate medical reasons.

In a separate interview, Gulu District Health Educator Dr. William Onyai echoed these concerns, linking herbal medicine to premature births, miscarriage, and maternal mortality.
Dr. Onyai highlighted a major technical risk: herbal medicines lack standardized dosages and are often produced in unregulated environments. He urged women to prioritize antenatal care at recognized health facilities to ensure a supervised and safe delivery.
The reality of these warnings was underscored by a survivor who spoke on condition of anonymity. She shared a harrowing account of attempting to terminate a pregnancy resulting from rape. Her testimony highlighted how unsafe practices nearly cost her her life, serving as a grim reminder of the risks associated with non-professional medical interventions.
Health officials continue to urge the public to seek professional medical guidance and rely on verified health information to protect the lives of mothers and their infants.
