Introduction, Mission and Vision

INTRODUCTION
Unity fm is a radio station based in Lira town covering the districts of Lira, Apac, Kitgum, Pader,
Kaberamaido, Dokolo, Amolatar, Oyam, Otuke, Kole Abim, Kotidio, and parts of Gulu, Amuru,
Katakwi, Masindi, Soroti, Nakasongola with listenership of over 4,000,000 people (estimates). Our main
objective is to inform/sensitize, educate and entertain the rural community. We aim at promoting Unity
and Development while explaining government and donor policies on development to the population as
our name Unity “Radio Alwak” suggests. It has been in operation for the last 24 years.

PROGRAMMING
The strength of the station lies in carefully selected educative programs in all-major spheres of life (i.e.social, cultural, political, health and economic development) besides it’s fully – fledged news department is reputable for airing breaking news both on local and international scenes. It is this unique factor in programming that has enabled Unity FM to capture high listener-ship in this period since its inception in May 2001. Unity FM also boasts of the best breed of presenters (DJs) who are knowledgeable and are exposed to the modern state of the art Broadcast Journalism Techniques.

LANGUAGES:
The local flavour is not only in the programming, but also in the fact that Unity FM broadcasts in the
local languages that are clearly listened to and understood by the people in its coverage area i.e. Luo,
and English. The fact that we use Luo as the dominant language on the station; it has pulled the
rural flock, a feature that blends well our mission objectives.

LISTENERSHIP:
The aforementioned quality programming in this area has prompted Unity FM to adopt an all-round
localized programming carefully selected to cater for all classes of persons. A clientele research rates us
as the most listened to radio in the region.
This is so because most of our programs are tailor made to suit the taste of our listeners who comprise of
elites and residents of rural community. These programs include Unity Top 20, The Unity Doctor, “Great
Morning Show”, “The family Agenda” Sunday Miscellany, Crime prevention, Sports roundup , The
Kids Show, The Teenage Show.
