Bishop advocates renewal, justice, and environmental stewardship during lent

Lira, Uganda – As Christians worldwide mark Ash Wednesday on March 5, 2025, the Bishop of Lira Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, has called for a radical transformation of hearts, urging believers to embrace repentance and renewal during this Lenten season.

Addressing journalists at his residence, Bishop Wanok emphasised that Lent is not merely a ritual, but a time for deep introspection and commitment to God’s will.

He described the ashes received on Ash Wednesday as a powerful symbol of humility and a call to genuine conversion, particularly during this Holy Year of Jubilee of Hope.

With Uganda preparing for the 2026 general elections, Bishop Wanok expressed concern over the political climate, lamenting that leaders often prioritise self-interest over the welfare of the people.

“The Church has always championed peace and justice, yet our messages often go unheeded,” he noted. “Leaders must recognise that governance is a service, not a personal enterprise. We urge all politicians to conduct themselves with integrity, putting the nation above personal ambitions.”

He urged voters to reflect on their choices, emphasising that electing responsible leaders is a moral duty.

Bishop Wanok also highlighted environmental degradation as a pressing concern, calling for responsible stewardship of nature.

He discouraged harmful agricultural practices such as burning grass and excessive use of chemicals, advocating instead for sustainable farming methods.

“Caring for the environment is part of our Christian duty. We must protect the earth for future generations by practising sustainable farming and avoiding actions that deplete our natural resources,” he said.

Touching on the ongoing development of the Marian Shrine at Iceme parish into a religious tourism site, Bishop Wanok stressed the need to preserve its primary role as a place of faith formation.

“While development brings opportunities, we must ensure that catechesis remains central. The shrine should be a beacon of spiritual growth, not merely a financial attraction,” he cautioned.

As Lent begins, Bishop Wanok urged Christians to deepen their faith through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, making this period a true journey of spiritual renewal.
