On May 11, 2025, the Amolatar Boda Boda Association marked a significant milestone by electing new Women League leaders to represent women from the district at the union level.
The election process was overseen by District Chairperson Okello Patrick, affectionately known as Amido, who expressed satisfaction with the smooth and successful selection of leaders.
In an exclusive interview with our reporter, Okello shared insights into the broader context of this event, highlighting that last week, the Ugandan government convened meetings with boda boda operators in Gulu.
He underscored that the government has ambitious development plans aimed at fostering growth within the association. “The future looks promising, and we are excited for what’s to come,” he remarked.
Additionally, Okello announced that registration for all boda boda operators under the union will commence on May 19, 2025.
This initiative is expected to streamline operations and enhance the support provided to operators across the region.
Acen Susan Okello, now serving as the Chairperson of the Women’s League, reinforced the importance of these elections.
She disclosed that the national union of Uganda had mandated all districts to elect women leaders, emphasising that this move aligns with their strategy to empower women within the boda boda sector. “This union is not just an organisation; it is a business initiative designed to encourage more women to participate and benefit from the various government support systems available,” she stated.
Moreover, Acen urged the local community to shift their perceptions about boda boda operators. “It’s time to stop underestimating the capabilities and potential of boda boda operators. We are no longer seen merely as small-scale transport providers; we are evolving into a vital and organised sector,” she declared.
The newly elected officials of the Women League include:
Chairperson: Susan Okello
Vice Chairperson: Aceng Esther
Loan Officer: Etap Hellen
Speaker: Apio Doreen
Secretary: Alwadi Holiver
With these fresh faces at the helm, the Amolatar Boda Boda Association aims to foster inclusivity and growth, creating opportunities for women while solidifying the association’s role in the community’s economic development.
