Retired Colonel Ongia restores borehole, easing water crisis after election defeat

Retired Colonel John Francis Ongia has taken decisive action to address a severe water crisis in Agwingiri Sub-county by restoring a broken borehole in Anywalwake Village.

The intervention underscores his commitment to serving his community despite his recent electoral defeat.

The borehole had been non-functional for five months before it was fully repaired on Tuesday using materials supplied by Col Ongia.

His hands-on involvement highlights his dedication to easing the hardships faced by residents who have struggled with water scarcity during the period.

Col Ongia contested the Kioga County Member of Parliament seat but lost to Colline Angwech. However, he said his commitment to promoting development and improving the welfare of his constituents remains unchanged.

His intervention reflects a leadership approach centred on community service rather than political gain.

Local leaders and residents have praised Col Ongia for the intervention, saying it has improved access to water in the area.

Mrs Anna Ayuku expressed gratitude for the provision of essential pipes and rods that enabled the borehole to be repaired.

Chairperson LC1 of Anywalwake Village, David Okullo, applauded Col Ongia’s generosity and commitment to the community, noting that it is rare for a candidate to continue supporting residents after an electoral loss.

He said, “Colonel Ongia’s dedication goes beyond politics; it is about genuine care for his people.”

Mr Aber Samule, LC2 Chairperson of Anywalwake Parish, praised the retired colonel’s continued leadership and encouraged him to sustain his support for community development initiatives regardless of his political standing.

“His commitment is a shining example for all leaders to follow,” he added.

A group of mothers, overjoyed by the restoration of the borehole, expressed relief after enduring five months without access to it. One mother said, “We can now fetch clean water without walking long distances. Col Ongia has truly helped us.”

Col Ongia urged elected leaders to remember their voters and work closely with communities to prevent prolonged suffering caused by broken infrastructure.

His intervention in Anywalwake Village sets a strong example of leadership grounded in service, compassion and a commitment to community welfare.
