Inzikuru launches U-14 tournament, pledges annual youth sports support

Legendary Ugandan athlete Dorcus Inzikuru has officially launched the Centre of Uganda Tournament in Amolatar District, pledging her long-term support for youth sports development and the promotion of local talent.

Inzikuru, a former 3,000-metre steeplechase world champion, was the chief guest at the tournament’s launch held on Sunday, September 29, 2026, at Olyaka Primary School playground.

She promised to support various sporting disciplines in future editions, emphasising her commitment to transforming the competition into a major annual event that places Amolatar—geographically recognised as the Centre of Uganda—on the national sporting map.

Inzikuru commended parents for allowing and encouraging their children to participate in the tournament. She noted that sports play an important role in nurturing talent, building confidence and promoting self-esteem, particularly among young girls.

She further announced that the multi-discipline tournament would become an annual fixture in the district, with activities rotating across different sports fields each year.

The tournament’s patron, Obonyo Magwar, expressed gratitude to Inzikuru for partnering with the initiative and attending the launch.

He said her involvement would inspire young athletes and help expose local talent beyond Amolatar District.

The Under-14 competition, which featured both boys’ and girls’ categories, ended with dramatic penalty shootouts following closely contested matches.

In the girls’ final, Abako Modern Primary School faced Awikori Primary School in a goalless stalemate. Abako Modern eventually prevailed 3–2 on penalties to lift the championship trophy.

The boys’ final followed a similar pattern, with Aguludia Primary School defeating Olyaka Primary School 3–1 in a penalty shootout after the teams failed to break the deadlock during normal time.

The colourful event attracted several sports administrators, including Amolatar District Sports Officer Daniel Okao and other regional officials. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening grassroots sports structures and creating more opportunities for young athletes.
