Amolatar suspect escapes after motorcycle crash injures police officer, complainant

A police officer and a complainant sustained broken legs after a suspect arrested for robbery escaped while being transferred to Amolatar Central Police Station.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, near Acengryeny Primary School in Amolatar District, when the suspect, identified as Emunyo Bonny, allegedly jumped onto the neck of the motorcycle rider, causing the motorcycle to crash.

Bonny, a resident of Aputi, had been arrested on Saturday after allegedly snatching a bag belonging to Alibo Harriet, a clothes vendor from Alelangao B in Muntu Sub-county.

The incident occurred at Tete Trading Centre, where Harriet’s bag, which reportedly contained Shs200,000, was allegedly snatched.

Although members of the public pursued the suspect, he initially escaped. However, residents later traced and arrested him, reportedly identifying him by his dreadlocked hair.

He was subsequently taken to Acengryeny Police Station together with the complainant.

According to Harriet’s husband, Olega Richard, the family was informed on Tuesday morning that they needed to provide Shs40,000 to facilitate the suspect’s transfer to Amolatar Central Police Station. Olega said he managed to raise only Shs20,000 by around 4:00pm.

He said that after presenting the money to the officer in charge of the station, he was advised to use it to fuel a motorcycle for the transfer. One police officer was assigned to accompany them.

However, Olega alleged that the officer did not handcuff the suspect before the journey.

When they reached an area near Acengryeny Primary School, Bonny reportedly jumped onto the rider’s neck and choked him, causing the motorcycle to crash.

The suspect sustained severe injuries, with bones reportedly piercing through his skin, while the police officer riding on the back and complainant Ocima Julius also suffered broken legs.

Despite his injuries, Bonny allegedly attempted to grab the police officer’s firearm before crawling away and escaping from the scene.

Julius expressed dissatisfaction with the police handling of the matter, accusing officers of demanding money to transport the suspect and failing to restrain him properly.

Efforts to obtain a comment from the Amolatar District Police Commander were unsuccessful by press time.

The injured police officer and complainant were taken to Amolatar Health Centre IV for treatment. The suspect remains at large.
