More than 300 patients received medical attention during a health outreach programme held to commemorate St Luke’s Day at St Luke Church of Uganda in Amolatar District.
The outreach took place on Sunday, 18 October 2026, at the church in Apalepe Cell, Apalepe Ward, Amolatar Town Council.
The church, which serves as the administrative centre of Amolatar Urban Archdeaconry, was celebrating its centenary alongside the annual observance of St Luke’s Day.
The Bishop’s Commissary of Lango Diocese, the Very Reverend Canon James Okaka, said the church needs healthy Christians, noting that pastoral ministry becomes particularly difficult when many members are unwell.
“Pastoral ministry to the infirm presents considerable challenges. The church therefore needs healthy Christians who can actively participate in its mission,” Canon Okaka said.
He urged Christians to avoid unhealthy dietary practices and sexual misconduct, which he identified as contributing factors to various health conditions.
Canon Okaka congratulated the congregation on reaching the 100-year milestone and based his message on the life of St Luke, whom he described as a highly educated person and the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.
He also noted that St Luke was a physician who demonstrated concern for the wellbeing of God’s people.
As part of its efforts to promote healthy living, St Luke Church established the St Luke Health Club. The initiative includes aerobic exercise sessions held every Monday, Wednesday and Sunday from 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm.
The Archdeacon of Amolatar Urban Archdeaconry, the Venerable Reverend Canon Olwol, thanked the descendants of the church’s founding members for their contributions to its growth and development.
He particularly recognised Professor Omara Ojungu, Omia David Livingston, who helped establish the church’s foundational structures, and Muze Icakai Eyaa.
St Luke Church was established in 1926 in the Kakaga area of Kalaki Parish, which was then under the jurisdiction of Soroti Diocese.
