The suspect, identified as Lweny Jerom, a resident of Angai Cell in Kangai Town Council, allegedly entered the dormitory with the intention of scaring and potentially harming the students.
The Officer in Charge (OC) of Kangai Police Station, Paul Odoch, confirmed the incident, stating that school authorities alerted the police after finding Jerom hiding under one of the girls’ beds. “Security personnel rushed to the scene and rescued the youth from angry students who had already begun assaulting him,” said Odoch during a phone interview.
The turmoil caused by the incident sent shockwaves through the school community.
According to Joel Okello, the Deputy Headteacher of Kangai SSS, the ordeal left students traumatized, disrupting normal learning activities on Thursday.
In their panic, many students fled to nearby bushes, spending the entire night outside while law enforcement fired warning shots and tear gas to subdue the situation.
“This behavior caused fear and anxiety among our students. Parents need to be vigilant and ensure their children are safeguarded to prevent such disruptions to their education,” Okello urged during his remarks.
Stakeholders within the community are demanding justice for the affected students.
Morish Oye, the PTA Chairperson for Kangai SSS, stated that formal charges will be filed against the suspect, accusing him of trespassing and attempting to sexually assault the girls.
Similarly, Denis Ower, the LC3 Chairperson of Kangai Town Council, expressed his commitment to ensuring the suspect is tried and held accountable under the law. “We will not tolerate such actions in our community. I advise parents to remain vigilant to protect their children,” Ower added.
Following his initial detention at Kangai Police Station, Jerom has been transferred to Dokolo Central Police Station (CPS) as investigations continue.
Police are now compiling evidence and statements before presenting charges against him in court.
This shocking incident has raised concerns about security at schools and the safety of students, prompting calls for tighter measures to prevent future occurrences.
Authorities are expected to provide updates on the case as investigations progress.
For now, the focus remains on ensuring justice is served while fostering a safe learning environment for the students of Kangai Secondary School.
