The West Lango Diocese has entered into a partnership with the Institution of Surveyors of Uganda (ISU), supported by the Ministry of Lands, to address land issues in Uganda.
Their work will focus on resolving disputes over Foundation Body land in Church of Uganda (COU) schools, as well as land conflicts involving more than 700 acres within the diocese.
Rt. Rev. Julius Caesar Nina Otim, Bishop of West Lango Diocese, confirmed this development while delivering his Easter message at St Peter’s Cathedral, Aduku, on Sunday.
He stated that the diocese has entered into a one-year agreement with the Institution of Surveyors of Uganda to help resolve the ongoing land disputes affecting the region.
The Bishop further explained that the Institution of Surveyors has already committed to the arrangement.
He added that the upcoming activities will require Christians to unite and support the protection of church land and schools for the wellbeing of the church.
The Bishop confirmed that this partnership includes several projects: a tree-planting initiative, with seedlings distributed free to Christians to establish forests in West Lango; the drilling of 50 free boreholes at churches across the four districts of the diocese; the construction of four football pitches in Oyam, Kole, Apac, and Kwania districts; and the construction of three buildings, including one for St Luke Health Centre III, a library/computer/office block, and a classroom block at Aber Primary School in Oyam district to support children with various disabilities.
Rev. David Nelson Okello Ocen, Chairperson of the Land Commission in West Lango Diocese, urged Christians to stand firm as honest witnesses concerning land originally donated for the construction of churches and schools.
Attempts to obtain a comment from the leadership of the Institution of Surveyors of Uganda and the Ministry of Lands were unsuccessful at the time of compiling this story.
