Mr Okot Isaac Apur, the 25-year-old Chief Executive Officer of Golden Harvest Poultry Learning Centre, has encouraged young people to start poultry farming on a modest scale as a pathway to success in agriculture.
Golden Harvest Poultry Learning Centre is located in Alyecmeda Village, Anywalwake Parish, Agwingiri Sub-county, Amolatar District.
Mr Apur said poultry farming can expand rapidly and is accessible to people of all ages, provided they are dedicated and committed to managing the enterprise properly.
He explained that poultry farming serves two important purposes: generating income and improving household food security.
According to him, farmers who apply good management practices can earn substantial returns from the enterprise.
Mr Apur currently keeps 1,000 one-month-old chicks, comprising Rainbow Rooster and Sasso breeds.
He particularly recommends the Rainbow Rooster breed because of its fast growth rate, which enables farmers to take their birds to market sooner.
He emphasised that proper housing is essential for successful poultry production. Farmers should provide clean, well-ventilated and secure shelters to protect their birds from diseases, harsh weather and predators.
Mr Apur’s long-term vision is to develop Golden Harvest into a comprehensive learning centre for poultry farming and other emerging agricultural practices in the region.
Through the centre, he hopes to equip farmers and young people with practical skills to help them create employment, improve food security and increase household incomes.
