Parliamentary petition prompts ministry action on flooded Olik swamp road connecting communities

Engineers from the Ministry of Works and Transport have confirmed that construction works on the Olik Swamp road, connecting Awelo and Team sub-counties, will commence in October.

The announcement follows a field inspection conducted Wednesday 23rd.Sept.2026 at Olik Swamp and Corner Namubere, an area that has been completely cut off by rising water levels.

The swamps connect Awelo , Etam sub county and Etam Town council Anolatar District

The inspection was carried out following a submission on the matter by the Kioga North Member of Parliament on the floor of Parliament Hon Geoffery Ocen Kiring , as well as a formal letter he sent to the Ministry of Works and Transport.

Hon Geoffrey Ocen Kiring said residents of Awelo are currently unable to access Team Sub-county because the Olik Swamp has been submerged.

George Okello Ongol, the LC3 Chairperson of Etam Sub-county, said the flooding has severely affected business activities in both Etam and Awelo.

Tom Okao Aweri, the LC3 Chairperson of Awelo Sub-county, explained that residents who previously used the route to access Etam are now forced to travel long distances in search of alternative routes. He appealed to the Ministry to fast-track the road works.

Community members also expressed disappointment over the poor condition of the road, which has disrupted movement and trade in the area.

Following their inspection, ministry engineers assured residents that construction on the Olik Swamp road will begin in October.
