In anticipation of the upcoming reopening of schools for the first term in 2024, Kagadi district’s nutritionist, Ismail Zahura Rutagwera, is urging school leaders to implement meal plans aimed at preventing malnutrition-related diseases among students.
The schools in Uganda are set to officially re-open on 5th February 2024
Speaking at Kagadi General Hospital today (Tuesday), Ismail emphasized the critical need for schools to address malnutrition issues, especially after Kagadi district was ranked third in Uganda for malnutrition challenges last year.
Ismail Zahura Rutagwera highlighted the importance of developing comprehensive meal plans to combat the prevalence of stomach ulcers and other health complications among schoolchildren in the district.
Upon the reopening of schools, Ismail mentioned plans to visit schools and assess their meal plans.
The goal is to understand how children are being fed and identify areas for improvement.
Ismail stressed that children cannot thrive on a diet solely consisting of posho and beans for an entire term.
He emphasized the necessity of providing balanced meals to ensure the overall well-being and growth of students.
Additionally, Ismail highlighted the correlation between adequate nutrition and academic performance.
He emphasized that students need sufficient food with proper nutrition to excel in their studies.
