The business community in Pajule Town Council has appealed to police authorities to increase the number of officers deployed at Pajule Police Station, citing rising criminal activity and the need for enhanced operations.
The request was made on Wednesday during the official handover of a Toyota pickup patrol vehicle, to the station by the East Acholi Regional Police Commander.
The Toyota pickup truck, registration number UP 5733, was officially handed over by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tom Beinomugisha, the East Acholi Regional Police Commander (RPC), to authorities from both Pader District and Pajule Police Station at the town council grounds.
Patrick Oyet, Chairperson of the business community in Pajule, thanked the Uganda Police Force for their continued efforts in combating crime, especially in urban areas. However, he expressed concern that the new patrol vehicle may not deliver its intended impact without adequate manpower.
“We appreciate the government and the police for providing this vehicle,” Oyet said. “But without enough officers on the ground, especially during night operations, it may not be very effective.”
Oyaka Charles Obakat, the Assistant Town Clerk of Pajule Town Council, also spoke at the function, highlighting the alarming rate of house break-ins and theft within the community.
Obakat emphasized the need for vigilance among residents and urged the public to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
“There are too many cases where homes are broken into during the night. While this vehicle will help in responding faster, security begins with the community being alert,” he said.
Responding to the concerns, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Eugene Elwaru, the Regional Human Resource Officer for Aswa East, acknowledged the staffing gaps and assured the community that efforts are underway to address the issue.
Elwaru said his recent assessment of Pajule Police Station was conducted in line with the Presidential directive on the Sub-County Policing Model, which mandates that every sub-county police station must have:
He commended the Regional Police Commander for delivering the vehicle and reaffirmed his commitment to work closely with the District Police Commander (DPC) to fill the staffing gaps.
According to Jackson Bogere,DPC Pader, the district currently comprises 23 lower local government units, of which only 14 have established police stations. He added that Ogom and Lapul sub-counties were the most recent to receive police posts under the ongoing expansion of the police network.
