Judith Obina Toopacho, the Gulu City Woman MP aspirant in the 2026 general elections and former private secretary for political affairs to President Yoweri Museveni, has urged young people to stop selling family land, warning that the habit is endangering household stability and long-term economic security.
While addressing supporters at a campaign rally in Layibi Central cell, Tegwana parish, Pece-Laroo division last week, Obina noted that many youths are increasingly selling off family land to purchase motorcycles for boda boda work an investment she described as risky and unsustainable.
Obina, who resigned on 13 June 2025 after 25 years of service in the President’s Office to pursue the Gulu City Woman MP seat, emphasized that land should never be disposed of for short-term gains. Instead, she advised that it can be hired out or used for productive ventures such as farming, which can secure food and a steady income for families. She further encouraged households to take up coffee farming, citing its strong market demand and potential to boost livelihoods.
During the event, Anena Beatrice, a mother of two, appealed to Obina to support communities with coffee seedlings so families can begin cultivating the crop and improve their income.
Obina is contesting as an independent candidate and will face NRM’s Alima Joyce, incumbent MP Aol Betty Ocan of the PFF, and Lagum Concy of NUP in the 2026 general elections.
