Thousands of runners are expected to take part in the fourth edition of the LACOBA Marathon, scheduled for this Holy Saturday at Kaunda Grounds in Gulu City.
Organised by the Layibi Old Boys Association (LACOBA), the annual event has this year expanded beyond the college to actively involve the wider community, with a strong focus on promoting academic excellence and social cohesion through sport.
Speaking at a press briefing, LACOBA Chairperson, Kenneth Okot, said the marathon is designed not only as a fitness event but also as a platform to reconnect alumni, students, and the community.
The marathon will feature 5-kilometre and 10-kilometre races, as well as a walkers’ category to ensure inclusivity. The routes will pass through key parts of the city, including Olailong Roundabout, the Post Office, the Bank of Uganda, and St. Monica.
The Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, who will also serve as the chief marathoner, is expected to flag off the race at 8:00 a.m.

In addition to the race, participants will take part in aerobics sessions and enjoy live entertainment from local artists and cultural groups.
LACOBA Executive Member, Charles Okidi Kilama, said the marathon was chosen to allow broader community participation compared with other sports disciplines.
Organisers say more than 1,200 participants have already registered, with running kits priced at UGX 30,000 available at designated outlets across the city.
Held under the theme “Consolidating Our Network through Sport,” the event aims to strengthen alumni ties while promoting talent development and community engagement.
The formal programme is expected to conclude by 11:00 a.m., followed by entertainment, refreshments, and Easter celebrations.

Organisers say the marathon is increasingly becoming a key platform for fostering unity, pride, and a shared vision for academic and social development in northern Uganda.
