Vendors and leadership at Cuk Wilobo Market in Pece-Laroo Division, Gulu City, have raised the alarm over a looming health crisis and severe business stagnation caused by illegal garbage dumping and a lack of access routes to the facility.

The traders claim that the market, which is a public facility, is being choked by waste generated outside its boundaries, while private developers have blocked crucial entry points, cutting off customers.

Speaking to reporters at the market on Thursday18, June, 2026, the Market Chairperson, Ms. Jennifer Aciro, strongly condemned the high level of indiscriminate waste disposal around the facility. She revealed that residents from neighboring residential areas, particularly Vanguard cell, have turned the market into their primary rubbish collection ground.

Traders operating inside Cuk Wilobo say the combination of a foul environment and blocked access points is killing their businesses.

Ms. Lucy Ajok, a market vendor, appealed to Gulu City and Pece-Laroo Division authorities to establish a reliable waste management schedule to curb the accumulation of filth.

Meanwhile, Ms. Margaret Amony another vendor stressed that as a government-established marketplace, Cuk Wilobo requires immediate infrastructural protection from division planners. She urged city leaders to intervene and negotiate the reopening of the blocked corridors to allow free movement of customers.

According to Mayor Aber Gifta, the division executive, along with newly sworn-in city and division councilors, are currently undergoing mandatory intensive induction training at the Acholi Inn Hotel in Gulu City. The mayor, however, assured the public and the trading community that the division leadership is fully aware of the market challenges and will provide a definitive, clear roadmap to resolve the issues.
