Gulu council approves land for security infrastructure in Awach Town

The Gulu District Council has approved a motion to allocate land for key security infrastructure in Awach Town, aimed at strengthening public safety, improving emergency response times and protecting local businesses.

Hon. Obol Justine Simpleman, the LCV Chairperson of Gulu District, presented the proposal to the district council during a full council meeting held on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, at the district council hall.

The proposal seeks to allocate land for key security offices and police facilities in Awach Town.

The motion follows security concerns in Awach Town, where a young local businessman recently lost his life. Addressing councillors, Hon. Obol highlighted concerns over response times during critical security incidents, noting that the current police facility is approximately three kilometres from Awach’s commercial hub.

To address the enforcement gap, the district leadership proposes setting aside two acres of land in the town’s central business area. Under the proposed plan, the land allocation will be distributed as follows: one acre for a dedicated police station, half an acre for the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), and half an acre for the office of the District Internal Security Officer (DISO).

The motion was formally seconded by Hon. Opige Denis, the male councillor for Awach Town Council. Supporting the proposal, Hon. Denis stressed that security for business owners in the town council had long been compromised because the main police facilities are located far away in Burcoro.

Council members approved the proposal, with a specific resolution that the land be granted on a 49-year leasehold tenure. The arrangement secures the land for long-term security operations while ensuring that ownership remains vested in Gulu District, in accordance with national land regulations.
