Gulu residents share swamp water with livestock

Residents of Oguru Cell, Wang Nen ‘B’, Unyama Ward, Laroo-Pece Division in Gulu City, are facing a severe water shortage, forcing some households to collect water from the Unyama swamp, which is also used by pigs, goats and cattle.

The concern was raised during a community meeting held on 22 September 2026, where residents said the area has about 98 households and more than 1,000 people but relies on only one borehole.

Residents said the borehole is more than two kilometres away for some households, making access difficult, especially for elderly residents.

The situation has forced families to depend on unsafe swamp water, raising concerns about possible health risks.

Amito Majuma, a resident of Oguru Cell, said the community has begun contributing Shs2,000 per household towards repairing the existing borehole.

Amito added that the community is now forced to share water from the Unyama swamp with animals, including pigs, goats and cattle, a situation that has heightened concerns over the safety and quality of the water residents consume.

Akanyo Hellen, a 39-year-old mother and resident of the cell, said the community urgently needs more water sources to reduce the burden on households.

Gifter Aber, Mayor of Laroo-Pece City Division, has pledged to meet the community to listen to their concerns and discuss possible interventions.
