Omoro District gears up for major road rehabilitation as funds are released

Residents of Omoro District who have been enduring the poor state of community roads have been asked to remain calm as the district prepares to commence major rehabilitation works.

The call was made by the Omoro District LCV Chairperson and District Roads Committee Chairperson, Hon. Okot Andrew Obibi, while speaking to Speak FM in Gulu City.

According to Hon. Okot Andrew Obibi, the government has released funds for the current quarter, paving the way for the district to start work on feeder roads and community access routes that have become almost impassable due to heavy rains.

He noted that although the total budget allocation for road rehabilitation this financial year stands at one billion shillings, the money is released in small quarterly instalments. Because of this, the district will prioritise the most critical and busy community access routes first.

Hon. Obibi, however, decried the rampant destruction of roads by some community members. He warned farmers against dragging ox-ploughs along tarmacked and murram roads and appealed to landowners to allow the district to dig offshoots and drainage channels on their land to divert running water and protect the roads from being washed away.

He emphasised that road maintenance is a collective responsibility that requires teamwork between leaders and the local community.

On health service delivery, Hon. Obibi also disclosed that plans are underway to upgrade Lalogi Health Centre IV to district hospital status, a move he said will bring specialised services closer to the people and reduce referrals to Gulu.

With the assurance from local leaders, residents of Omoro are hopeful that improvements in road connectivity and health services will contribute to better livelihoods.

More than 70% of secondary national roads and district roads in the northern region remain unpaved, while seasonal heavy rains and limited equipment contribute to maintenance backlogs on feeder roads.
