Authorities in Layibi Division have received funds to resume garbage collection following months of public concern over an uncollected waste heap at Alot Market, commonly known as Cuk Alot.
The dumping site, located near residential homes in Gulu, had gone uncollected for nearly seven months, triggering complaints from residents and traders who warned of heightened health risks, especially during the rainy season. Vendors at the market say the prolonged delay disrupted livelihoods. Acayo Prossy, a trader at Alot Market, described the situation as alarming, noting that the persistent stench drove customers away and hurt business.
Community members also raised safety concerns for children. Mark Malkom said runoff during rains worsened the hazard, adding that repeated complaints to city authorities had gone unanswered.

Responding to the concerns, Patrick Lumumba, Mayor of Layibi Division, acknowledged the delay and attributed it to funding constraints. He confirmed that funds have now been released, enabling garbage collection to resume in several areas, with Cuk Alot scheduled next.
Lumumba also urged residents to practice responsible waste disposal, warning that indiscriminate dumping poses serious public health risks.
Residents say they are cautiously optimistic that the renewed funding and collection efforts will deliver a lasting solution to the sanitation challenge and avert potential disease outbreaks linked to poor waste management.
