Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong storms left many residents of Kamuli District counting their losses on Saturday night. According to community members, the rains began normally but quickly turned violent, destroying houses, trees and crops.
More than 200 households were affected, with many families now seeking shelter in nearby churches and schools. Residents are appealing to the government for urgent support.
Kamuli is among the districts experiencing rapid expansion of sugarcane growing, which has contributed to widespread deforestation despite government efforts to sensitise communities about environmental conservation.
Speaking to us, Mr Bulo Faizal, the LC3 Chairperson for Butansi Subcounty, said they are working hard to engage the relevant authorities to support the affected families.
The worst-hit areas include Bulunda, Buswankama, Budidiri, Naibowa and Bulyampanda—all in Butansi Subcounty, Kamuli District.
