Journalists have pledged to work closely with communities and organisations to raise awareness and provide support for children living with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. This commitment came after moving testimonies about the challenges parents face in caring for affected children.
Speaking during the session, Mrs Ahimbisibwe Jackline, Assistant Programmes Manager for the Eastern Region, outlined the origins, aims and objectives of the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Uganda (SHAU). She urged the media to disseminate accurate information through community outreaches, radio talk shows and news coverage, emphasising the importance of presenting messages responsibly to avoid stigmatising patients.
Facilitator Mr Musota Ali explained how Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus develop in infants and highlighted strategies for managing their effects.
Meanwhile, Nakibogo Shamim, a journalist and Executive Director of MAAMA Africa, a community-based organisation in Buyende District, pledged to collaborate with the media to ensure communities receive accurate information and the necessary support.
