The Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association Uganda (SHAU) has launched a sensitisation campaign in Kamuli district to raise awareness and improve information flow on spina bifida and hydrocephalus, particularly among children and expectant mothers.
The campaign brought together Village Health Team (VHT) leaders, parish chiefs, and health officers including in-charges of various health centres at the Kamuli District headquarters.
According to the SHAU Eastern Region Coordinator, Mrs. Jackline Ahimbisibwe, the initiative aims to equip communities with knowledge to improve the quality of life for people living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus and their families. It also seeks to reduce the number of new cases through early interventions and preventive measures.
“We want to raise awareness, strengthen political advocacy, and promote human rights education,” Mrs. Ahimbisibwe said. “While the exact causes of spina bifida and hydrocephalus are not fully known, they are often linked to environmental and genetic factors, as well as lack of essential nutrients. These conditions are commonly detected within the first four weeks of pregnancy,” she added.
Kamuli District Health Inspector, Mr. Munyete Abuddala, encouraged pregnant mothers to visit health facilities regularly to detect and manage potential complications early. He also called on the community to embrace the upcoming health camp scheduled for Thursday.
The Village Health Team pledged to work closely with SHAU and district health officials to disseminate accurate information and promote community awareness.
Meanwhile, Namwenwa subcounty LC1 Chairperson, Mr. Mugweri Puis, urged parents to treat children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus with the same love and care as other children. He also condemned discrimination and called for inclusive support within communities.
