The community has been encouraged to be creative and protect the environment while also earning some income. In the past, plastics were commonly found scattered on the ground, as recycling initiatives had not yet been discovered. However, both the government and the community are now working hard to protect the environment by collecting plastics.

Plastic bottles, which were previously discarded, are now being collected and sold, providing an income for many people. Speaking to one of the local leaders, it was noted that many have earned money, as a kilogram of plastic bottles sells for between 300 and 500 shillings.

Plastics are harmful to the soil as they prevent water from penetrating, causing the soil to dry out quickly. Even worse, plastics take a long time to decompose, making it difficult for the soil to retain enough water, which contributes to climate change. It should be noted that there are various factors causing climate change, and human activities—such as throwing plastics on roads, compounds, and other areas—are a significant contributor.

The District Environmental Officer for Kamuli Municipality, Northern Division, told us in an interview that plastics have helped many people not only earn an income but also protect the environment. He encouraged residents to continue collecting plastics.
