The newly elected Local Council Five (LCV) Chairperson for Kamuli District, Mr Kaliro Dhizaala, has vowed to encourage communities to protect the environment, particularly wetlands, where human activities have led to environmental degradation.

He said communities require increased sensitisation on environmental protection and climate change, noting that many people are currently complaining about excessive heat, which he attributed to poor environmental management. Mr Dhizaala observed that activities such as rice growing and other forms of cultivation in wetlands have contributed to environmental destruction.

He called for proper guidance on sustainable use of wetlands, suggesting alternative activities such as brick making, fish farming and the growing of cocoyams.

Mr Dhizaala said that during his tenure, he will not allow bush burning in the community. Instead, he will encourage farmers to use mulching in their gardens, noting that bush burning during the dry season is unwise and harmful. He explained that bush burning not only destroys grass but also kills organisms that contribute to soil fertility, ultimately disrupting the entire ecosystem.

As policy makers with the authority to pass ordinances, Mr Dhizaala said he will ask the council to sit and chart a way forward to deal with individuals who fail to use wetlands responsibly.

He made the remarks against the backdrop of a warning from the meteorological authorities that the country is likely to experience extreme heat in the coming days. Speaking to the community through a local radio station in Kamuli, Mr Dhizaala said he will also champion patriotism through community activities such as Bulungi bwansi.
