Akii-Bua stadium construction hits 50% as AFCON 2027 nears

Government has confirmed that the construction of Akibua Olympic Stadium in Lira City is progressing ahead of schedule, raising hopes for early completion ahead of major international competitions.

Speaking during an inspection visit, the minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, commended the contractor for the steady progress, revealing that the facility is currently about 50 percent complete.

Ogwang noted that although the contractor had initially been given 18 months to complete the project, there is now a commitment to finish the works by December this year.

He explained that once construction is complete, the government will invite the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and other international sports bodies to inspect the facility and ensure it meets global standards.

The stadium will feature a modern football pitch, athletics track, and a semi-Olympic swimming pool, alongside courts for basketball, volleyball, and tennis. An indoor arena and a hostel capable of accommodating over 140 athletes are also part of the project.

According to the minister, Akibua Stadium is expected to serve as a backup training venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with plans to host teams and international competitions.

He also called on the private sector in Lango subregion to invest in hospitality infrastructure, especially high-standard hotels, to support the anticipated influx of international athletes and visitors.

Meanwhile, Eng. Mohamed Nazih, Project Manager SAMCO assured that roofing works and other installations are progressing steadily, with materials already on site and completion timelines being met.

Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium is a 129 million dollar project with a 20,000-seat multi-purpose facility with training piches , indoor arena and a swimming pool which was designed for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

With construction moving faster than expected, Akibua Olympic Stadium is shaping up to become a key sports facility in Uganda, boosting talent development and positioning the country to host major international events.
