Police in Mwitanzige Subcounty, Kakumiro district, have arrested a 24-year-old man, Elinest Tumusiime, a resident of Ijumangabo B village, Kakumiro district, on allegations of defiling a 13-year-old girl. The incident reportedly occurred over the weekend.
According to Benon Tukwasibwe, the victim’s father, his daughter approached him in tears, accusing Elinest of the crime.
The girl, whose identity is being protected due to her age, recounted that the suspect found her fetching water alone at a borehole. He allegedly dragged her into a nearby coffee plantation and assaulted her, threatening to kill her if she raised the alarm.
The Ijumangabo B LCI chairperson, Tumusingyize Robert, confirmed that the suspect is known in the area as a drug addict. Tumusingyize urged the youth to avoid drug abuse, which he believes contributes to such criminal behaviour. He also advised them to seek solace in prayer to steer clear of such evil acts.
As of press time, the police had not yet issued a statement, but investigations are ongoing.
