Bunyoro subregion elects new NRM leaders

The elections had earlier been postponed in Bunyoro subregion due to President Yoweri Museveni’s visit to officiate a thanksgiving ceremony for State Minister of Public Service Grace Mary Mugasa in Kikuube District.

The Bunyoro sub-region yesterday joined the rest of the country in electing new district, municipality and city leaders under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

In Kagadi District, Mpoza Karungi Erukana secured a resounding victory, becoming the new NRM District Chairperson after garnering 1,026 votes, defeating incumbent Omukwenda Mulumba Ali, who received 172 votes.

The elections held at Kagadi Secondary School, were conducted under tight security and presided over by the District NRM Registrar Mikisa John Chrysostom.

Karungi expressed gratitude to voters and pledged to unify the district and strengthen the party’s presence.

Other elected Kagadi NRM leaders include:

  • Amara Peter – Vice Chairperson
  • Patrick Zikashagizha – Secretary for Finance (unopposed)
  • Stephen Twesige Rulekere – General Secretary (421 votes).

Elections for Publicity and Entrepreneurship Secretary were postponed today Wednesday 28th May 2025 due to procedural misunderstandings.

Additional elected league leaders in Kagadi were!.

  • Kirungi Yoweri – Elders Chairperson (unopposed)
  • Namanya Richard – Workers League Chairperson (unopposed)
  • Kaben Stella Bisoborwa – Women’s League Chairperson (116 votes)
  • Obed Ambikiize – Youth League Chairperson (92 votes)

In Kakumiro District, State Minister for Transport Fred Byamukama was declared NRM Chairperson following a dramatic compromise.

Minister Fred Byamukama was declared a winner by Tanga Odoi the NRM Party Electoral commission chairperson.

His rival, Fred Mwesigwa, withdrew from the race in a deal brokered by the Prime Minister Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja, who emphasized party unity.

 Although Mwesigwa was initially proposed for Vice Chairperson, delegates rejected the agreement and he later lost in a separate contest to Onemus Twinamasiko the former Bugagaizi East Member of Parliament.

Outgoing Chairperson Josephat Tumwesigye the Bugagaizi South Member of Parliament now elected as NRM Treasurer, welcomed the change in leadership.

In Kibaale District, elections were held at Kibaale Resort Hotel.

Fred Matovu emerged victorious as NRM Chairperson with 357 votes, defeating Tom Businge (62 votes) and Junior Aliho (26 votes). Other results:

  • Lucy Brender Kaahwa – Vice Chairperson (185 votes)
  • Godfrey Muhonge, Peter Rugumba and Peter Kyamanywa went unopposed for Publicity, Secretary and Finance Officer respectively

Additional committee leaders included:

  • Joseph Bwemi – Entrepreneurship Chairperson (89 votes)
  • Resty Birungi – Women’s League (57 votes)
  • Tasingurwa Mwesigwa – Youth Chairperson (50 votes)
  • Dan Namanya – Veterans Chairperson (18 votes)
  • John Babwetera – Elderly Chairperson (64 votes)
  • Gantungo Byamukama – PWDs Chairperson (unopposed)
  • Emmanuel Mayanja – Historical Chairperson (unopposed)

In Hoima City, Eng. Jonard Asiimwe, CEO of Jonard investments was elected unopposed as NRM Chairperson.

Other leaders elected include:

  • Beatrice Friday – Vice Chairperson
  • Hajji Ramadhan Mugisa – Secretary for Finance
  • Joseph Ssegimba – General Secretary
  • Muhamad Kihimba – Publicity Secretary

In the Workers League:

  • Bob Nsekanabo – Chairperson
  • Joseph Byesigwa Supper – Vice Chairperson
  • Patrick Mugabi – General Secretary
  • Abubakari Busobozi – Finance
  • Kabagenyi Muhereza – Publicity

The election for the Women’s League chairperson ended in a tie between Hellen Azikiya and Betty Miramago each receiving five votes.

Eng. Asiimwe vowed to unite the party, while former Hoima MP Dr. Lawrence Bategeka promised to advocate for the elderly through improved access to SAGE funds.

Masindi District re-elected Kabakumba Labwoni Masiko as NRM Chairperson after she defeated John Karuhanga with 401 votes to 226.

Other winners include:

  • Kassim Kabagonza – Vice Chairperson (405 votes)
  • Brian Tunura – General Secretary (350 votes)
  • Wahid Babyesiza – Publicity Secretary (207 votes)
  • Noeline Tinka – Secretary for Finance (unopposed)
  • Stella Kobusinge – Youth Chairperson (70 votes)

District Registrar Moses Ogwang commended the peaceful conduct of the elections and Kabakumba urged party members to cooperate for the betterment of Masindi.

The Bunyoro sub-region, comprising Kagadi, Kibaale, Kakumiro, Kikuube, Hoima, Masindi,Bulisa Districts, Hoima City and Masindi Municipality, has now completed its NRM leadership renewal process.
