Assault is a criminal act involving threats that cause another person to fear or apprehend immediate unlawful violence or that result in physical harm.
It does not always require physical contact, as gestures such as raising a fist or spitting can constitute assault, though it can also involve a physical attack.
The Kibaale Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded the National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary flag bearer for Bugangaizi East constituency in Kakumiro district, Onesmas Twinamasiko, over allegations of assaulting Uganda’s Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabanja.
Robinah Nabanja is also the Kakumiro district Woman Member of Parliament on the NRM party ticket.
On 3 September, a court presided over by Her Worship Nazifa Namayaja heard that Twinamasiko allegedly assaulted Prime Minister Nabanja during the declaration of the party primaries at the Kakumiro NRM office.
Appearing in court, Twinamasiko denied the allegations.
The prosecution alleges that he attacked the Prime Minister in the presence of party supporters, accusing her of attempting to interfere with his victory—an allegation Nabanja strongly denied.
Nabanja explained that, as a leader, she was merely trying to restore order among party members who had developed misunderstandings during the declaration exercise.
Twinamasiko has been remanded to Kibaale Government Prison until 10 September.
The former legislator, Onesmas Twinamasiko, who represented Bugangaizi East from 2016 to 2021, recently defeated the incumbent MP Isha Black in the NRM party primaries.
