Management and staff of Kagadi District General Hospital are in grief after a fire gutted the hospital staff quarters, destroying property worth millions of shillings.
Fortunately, no deaths was recorded.
The fire, which broke out today 13 09 2025 at around 11:30 a.m., razed through the quarters leaving several health workers stranded.
Peter Simon Tumusiime the Kagadi Hospital Administrator said the cause of the fire had not yet been established though investigations are underway.
He noted that the tragedy highlighted the long-standing challenge of substandard housing for health workers at the facility.
Edger Kwikiriza a health practitioner at the hospital, said he was on duty attending to patients when he received a distress call from his family about the fire.
He expressed relief that his children, who had been left at home, escaped unhurt.
Edger applauded the swift response of residents who helped save some of his property and appealed to government to renovate the staff quarters, which were constructed in 1968.
He suspects the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault.
The Kagadi District Police Commander (DPC) Kenneth Ampurira cautioned occupants against using the affected quarters until a fire brigade report is released.
He also appealed to the Ministry of Water and Environment to ensure proper installation of water points in all government institutions as a preventive measure against such disasters.
Meanwhile, locals who sustained minor injuries during the rescue efforts, criticized government for ignoring repeated calls to renovate the Kagadi General Hospital dilapidated staff quarters.
