The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kagadi, Caroline Nanshemeza, has officially launched the operations of Steam for Light for African Communities (SLAC), an organisation aimed at promoting ecosystem restoration and environmental conservation in Kagadi District.

SLAC seeks to support communities to live harmoniously with nature through environmentally friendly practices as part of efforts to combat climate change.

The launch took place last evening at Nyamacumu B Village in Muhorro Sub-county, where Nanshemeza commended the organisation’s directors for introducing the project, noting that it will help address the effects of climate change.

She observed that Uganda is experiencing abnormal seasonal changes largely due to environmental degradation caused by deforestation, wetland encroachment and increased carbon emissions.

She emphasised the need for continuous sensitisation of communities on environmental protection.

Nanshemeza urged residents, especially those encroaching on wetlands, to vacate such areas and engage in tree planting to restore the environment.

William Prosper the Director of SLAC, said the organisation will work closely with communities to establish environmentally sustainable livelihood projects, including tree planting, beekeeping, poultry keeping, fish farming and linking farmers to markets for their produce.

He appealed to government authorities to reduce excessive enforcement against wetland encroachment and instead prioritise community sensitisation to encourage people to coexist sustainably with the environment.

Community members who spoke to our reporter, led by Odira Byonabye an Independent candidate for the Muhorro Sub-county Female Councillor seat, welcomed the project, saying it is expected to significantly boost development in the area.
