World Vision Uganda has unveiled a project aimed at restoring degraded landscapes in Pader, Agago, Omoro, Kole, Oyam, and the eastern districts of Tororo, Bugiri, and Butaleja to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Speaking at the project launch on Wednesday, 20 March 2024, at the district headquarters, Aber Stella, the Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) Project Officer for Pader and Agago districts, told district officials, cultural leaders, the media, and other stakeholders that the initiative seeks to promote the conservation of natural tree cover among farmers.
The project, dubbed, “Regreening Uganda Communities – Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) Catalyst Project for Pader District,” will be implemented in Pader and Paiula Sub county.
Aber notes that the five-year project, which runs until 2028, will help to regreen the degraded environment with the aim of mitigating the current adverse effects of climate change caused by extensive degradation of forest and wetland cover.
According to Aber, the project will also equip community members with skills to manage indigenous trees so that they can regenerate naturally at a very low cost. The project does not focus on planting new tree species but instead encourages the management of naturally occurring trees within the community.
The project, worth 11.7 billion Uganda Shillings and dubbed, “Regreening Uganda Communities – Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) Catalyst Project,” will be implemented in Pader, Agago, Omoro, Kole, and Oyam districts in northern Uganda.
World Vision Uganda aims to regenerate a total of 573,487 hectares of degraded landscape in northern and eastern Uganda.
