Forty-nine Parish Climate Change Committee (PCCC) members from Karangole parish in Pukor sub county, Awalmon parish in Pajule sub county, and Kilim parish in Laguti sub county were trained in proposal writing by the Least Developed Countries Initiative on Effective Adaptation and Resilience (LIFE-AR) programme on Tuesday, 17th December 2024, at Rasmoi Guest House, Pajule town council.

The PCCC is a body that links the district with the LIFE-AR team, elected by the community on Friday, 6th September 2024, in Kilim parish, Laguti sub county, Awalmon cell, Pajule town council, and Kalangore parish, Pukor sub county.

The LIFE-AR initiative, led by the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), empowers local communities by making them key agents in driving climate-resilient societies. In the following months, consultations were conducted in Pader district, where the community identified various investments, including tree planting, valley tank construction, fish pond development, and road construction.

Mr. Okello Alfred Peter, a PCCC member from Karangole parish, Pukor sub county, told Luo FM that he had gained valuable knowledge in writing project proposals, which will help them address disasters such as flooding.

The climate pattern in northern Uganda consists of two extreme seasons: hot and rainy. These weather patterns often lead to flooding in some areas.

During the rainy season, we fail to harvest water that could be used during the dry season for vegetable cultivation, irrigation, and domestic use.

Tyan John, the District Fisheries Officer, expressed concern that market vendors are importing vegetables from Mbale, when they could be grown in Pader. He added that they are promoting integrated farming systems to engage the community in various enterprises simultaneously.

Namuyiga Winny, Ministry of Water and Environment Team Leader in Pader district, stated that it is a principle of the LIFE-AR programme to build the community’s capacity in developing project proposals. She emphasised that they will develop the enterprises, which will be submitted to the national secretariat, following the guidance of the focal person at the district.
