Akena Alfred has been officially declared the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for the Pader District LCV Chairperson seat in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
The announcement was made on Thursday at the Pader District Council Hall, following a fresh round of NRM primary elections held nationwide on 24th July 2025. The primaries were conducted to select party flag bearers for district chairpersons, city and municipal mayors, and councillors at various levels.
According to the official declaration by Okot Jimmy Katumba, the NRM Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Akena Alfred emerged victorious with 15,637 votes, representing 39.63% of the total 39,461 votes cast.
He defeated two rivals: Oringa Godfrey Largo, who came second with 12,021 votes (30.46%), and the incumbent, Rt. Col. Fearless Obwoya Oyat, who garnered 11,803 votes (29.9%).
The outcome has drawn mixed reactions from residents, with many calling for unity. Ojara Alex, a resident of Lapul-Owida, urged both the community and party leaders to rally behind Akena to secure victory for the party in next year’s elections.
Meanwhile, Lowila CD Oketayot, the NRM District Chairperson, expressed gratitude to the election team and all stakeholders for a peaceful and successful exercise. She also called for continued unity within the party to ensure success in the forthcoming general elections.
In a related development, Agago District also concluded its NRM primaries, where the incumbent, Opio Leonard Ojok, retained the flag bearer position after securing 36,340 votes. His four challengers polled as follows: Abalo Lillian Ongom – 2,176; Okello John Wilfred Ateng – 29,360; Otto Wilson – 21,291; and Ojok Simon Odoch – 5,596.
A total of 94,763 votes were cast in Agago District, reflecting high voter engagement, despite reports of low turnout in other races across northern Uganda.
