Voters in the Acholi sub-region have been urged to remain vigilant and make informed decisions in the forthcoming 2026 general elections.
Rt. Rev. Nathan Kyamanywa, the retired Anglican Bishop of Bunyoro-Kitara Diocese (2002–2014), called on the people of Acholi to carefully consider the character and track record of those they choose to elect.
Speaking during the second commemoration of Rwot Awic Iburahim Abok Lutanymoi Wod Ayari at Laguti Primary School Grounds in Laguti Sub-county, Pader District, on Thursday, Bishop Kyamanywa cautioned voters against electing leaders who do not genuinely care for their people.
“Leaders who don’t care about the people they lead are not worthy to be voted into any public office,” he said.
He further warned voters against being swayed by small handouts or material gifts during campaigns.
Meanwhile, Hon. Santa Okot, the Member of Parliament for Aruu North County, proposed that the field hosting the commemoration ceremony be named “Awic Peace Square” in honor of Rwot Awic’s legacy.
Okot also suggested that preparations for next year’s event should begin early to allow for effective planning and coordination.
“If possible, preparations for next year should begin right after this year’s celebration. This will enable proper planning and organization,” she said.
Okot, who is seeking re-election in 2026, remains the only female candidate among seven contenders for the Aruu North seat and vowed to “kick the boys by far” in the coming elections.
The Deputy Paramount Chief of Acholi, Rwot Martine Otinga Otto Yayi—who is also the Rwot of Lamogi Clan in Amuru—criticized district leaders for failing to present to the President issues related to the Rwot Awic commemoration.

The ceremony was attended by Rwot David Onen Acana II, the Paramount Chief of Acholi, along with several clan chiefs, representatives from the Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prisons Service, UPDF, political leaders from different parties, local leaders from various Acholi districts, and residents from across Laguti Sub-county.
