Lira City has been ranked highest for HIV prevalence in the Lango sub-region, according to a 2024 report released by the Uganda AIDS Commission.
The report indicates that Lira City leads with 61,300 infections, followed by Oyam District with 15,700, and Kole District in third place with 11,400 cases. Otuke District recorded the lowest number of infections, with 3,800 cases.
Tom Etii, Director of Partnerships at the Uganda AIDS Commission, attributed the high number of cases in Lira City and Oyam to lifestyles associated with the numerous social venues and night-time business spots that attract large gatherings.
According to Etii, Lira City ranks 11th nationwide, which he describes as particularly risky for residents of the Lango sub-region, as many people travel to the city for business.

In Oyam District, Etii identified Minakulu, Kamdini, and Loro Town Councils as the highest-risk areas, while Amac Market was highlighted as the most at-risk in Lira District, and Anekapiri Market in Kole District.
He therefore urged all stakeholders to unite and work towards raising awareness to prevent the spread of HIV, particularly among uninformed teenagers.
The District Health Officer for Lira, Buchan Ocen, noted that despite the high HIV prevalence in Lira City, efforts are being made tirelessly to ensure those infected receive proper treatment and to prevent mother-to-child transmission for a healthier future.
He added that the highest-risk areas in Lira City are Juba Road and Kitgim Stage, as these are hubs where many commercial sex workers operate.
