The National Forestry and Tree Planting Act No. 8, 2003, prohibits dealings on land reserved as CFRs without the authorisation of the NFA, thus, in case of prohibited activities e.g. illegal pit sawing and charcoal burning, the timber and charcoal are impounded and other lawful measures taken.
Kagadi police have arrested and subsequently released on bond the district Environmental Officer, Byoona Gerald, for alleged misuse of office and illegal tree cutting, violating the National Forestry Act.
Gerald Byoona who was released on police bond yesterday, is accused of felling long-standing trees at the district headquarters for timber.
His arrest follows ongoing concerns over the continuous cutting of indigenous trees for timber at various district and town council headquarters, including Mabale Town Council headquarters, which has sparked public outcry over environmental issues.
Residents on social media have expressed fears of potential environmental disasters, such as the possible demolition of the Kagadi district administration block due to the removal of windbreakers. These actions are perceived to be driven by personal gain.
In response, Kagadi police swiftly arrested Gerald Byoona, who is accused of exploiting government trees for personal benefit. Despite being released on bond, the case has been forwarded to the resident state attorney for guidance on formal charges.
Albertine regional police spokesperson, SP Allan Julius Hakiza, confirmed that the accused officer had been falsely presenting himself as the rightful owner of the trees on public land and harvesting them for timber. Hakiza assured that once investigations are complete, Byoona Gerald will be prosecuted in court.
