Residents of Amilo village, in Amiiamilo parish, Ibuje subcounty in Apac district are appealing for help to stop the rampant theft of poultry and animals within their area.

This came to the limelight after residents on Tuesday morning intercepted a suspected chicken thief identified as Robson Omara, commonly known as Ojeeboy, who was carrying over 30 chicken parked in two separate sacks allegedly stolen from one of the peasant farmers in the area.

As soon as he was netted after the owner of the chicken sounded an alarm, the suspect escaped through a thick nearby bush, abandoning the motorcycle and the chicken on the road.

Amii village chairperson, Selly Aloi, told Radio Apac that after failing to arrest the suspect, angry residents burnt to ashes the suspect’s motorcycle registration number UFH 120J.

One of the locals who participated in probing the suspect but preferred not to be named by this publication said the rate of domestic animal theft and poultry is on the rise adding that over 20 animals have so far been stolen in the past month.

Josephine Adongo another resident on the other hand faulted police in the district for always releasing suspects on police bond rather than apprehending them before the courts of law.

George Abudul, the Apac Resident District Commissioner however commended residents for their endless efforts of stopping criminals, especially thieves in the area.

He also encouraged locals during a security meeting on Tuesday to take serious action against such criminals, adding that thieves have so far proven to be a very serious outbreak within the community of Apac that now requires combined efforts by both the community and security personnel.

This incident occurred amidst a rise in theft in Apac district and Apac municipality. Last week unknown criminals broke into Almana Bookshop, stealing items such as laptop computers, smartphones and money among others. Two people have so far been arrested according to a report.
