In a momentous announcement, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni revealed plans to provide 100 million shillings to the Lango Journalists’ Savings and Credit Cooperative (SACCO), along with a minibus to ease their transportation challenges.

The announcement was made at Barlegi State Lodge in Okwang sub county, Otuke district, during a meeting with journalists from the Lango sub-region this week.

The pledge of financial assistance and transportation comes in response to requests made by the journalists’ leadership during the same meeting.

President Museveni emphasised the importance of having well-informed, smart, and hardworking journalists who are financially secure, recognising that a financially empowered journalist is key to fostering an informed society.

“It is prudent to have journalists who are not only skilled and dedicated to their work but also financially empowered to carry out their duties with professionalism and independence,” President Museveni stated.

The 100 million shillings will be channelled into the Lango Journalists’ SACCO, enabling members to benefit from financial support to improve their welfare and capacity to work. Additionally, the minibus will provide much-needed mobility for journalists, facilitating their coverage of events and assignments across the region.

The President confirmed that the funds and minibus would be made available in February 2025, promising that this initiative would support the growth of the journalism profession in the region.

President Museveni is currently touring the country to oversee the implementation of the Parish Development Model (PDM) funds, a government initiative aimed at eradicating poverty by promoting economic empowerment at the grassroots level.

This move marks another step in President Museveni’s ongoing commitment to supporting media professionals and improving the working conditions of journalists across Uganda.
