Apac, Uganda — More than five students of Apac Seed Secondary School were injured following a violent attack by suspected community members during a school event on Easter night.

The incident occurred at around 10:00 PM, as the school hosted a talent show to mark the Easter celebrations. According to the headteacher, Mr Akeba James, the situation escalated when a group of male students went to fetch water from a borehole near the girls’ dormitory.

While there, the students reportedly noticed an unfamiliar man near the dormitory. When they attempted to question him, the suspect fled, leading them towards a group of other individuals who were allegedly hiding nearby.

The group, reportedly armed with pangas and knives, attacked the students, leaving several injured. Those admitted to Apac General Hospital include Awany Bruce (Senior Four), Ojok Ivan Okabo (Senior Four), and Oyila Jonathan, among others.

The attackers are said to have fled the scene after the students raised the alarm, attracting attention from others within the school.

The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Apac, Andrew Onyuk, confirmed the incident, stating that police responded swiftly and have since arrested nine suspects, who are currently detained at Apac Prison. He noted that more suspects remain at large and that investigations are ongoing.

Preliminary findings suggest that the violence may have arisen from a dispute between the students and the attackers over girls during the event, which reportedly involved interaction between students and members of the surrounding community.

The RDC further criticised the school administration for what he described as weak oversight of student activities, particularly the hosting of night events that involve members of the public.

Local leaders have also expressed concern. Okelo Kenneth, the LC1 Chairperson of the area, noted that frequent night dances and loud music often attract outsiders, some of whom may pose a threat to the community.

Police have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and restore calm. Attempts to obtain a comment from the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, Jimmy Patrick Okema, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
