Apac municipal council has commenced the swearing-in of newly elected village and parish chairpersons, with a call for the leaders to put aside political differences and focus on serving the community.
The exercise, conducted today, Wednesday, at Scouts Hall in Apac, attracted all 24 LC One chairpersons and four LC Two chairpersons from Akere Division. The division is the first in Apac Municipality to conduct the swearing-in exercise.
Akere Division Town Clerk, Elvis Patrick Onguu, says the exercise follows a directive requiring the newly elected leaders to be legally installed between August 17th and 30th, 2026.
Onguu says the leaders are urgently needed to support the delivery of essential services, following a leadership gap created after the recent local council elections.
He, however, called on the newly elected leaders to work together and coordinate with one another, as the council looks for funds to facilitate their induction and equip them with knowledge about their roles and responsibilities.
Meanwhile, Akere Division LC Three Chairperson, Maxwell Okech, cautioned the leaders against carrying political differences from the recent elections into office.
Okech urged them to prioritize the interests of residents and avoid greed for money, which he said could undermine their ability to serve the people effectively.
Presiding over the swearing-in ceremony, Apac Municipal Deputy Town Clerk, Douglas Odyambo, appealed to the leaders to exercise their mandates responsibly for the success of their communities.
Odyambo encouraged the leaders to consult relevant municipal offices whenever necessary and pledged the council’s support to enable them to deliver effective services.
Akere Division is the first to conduct the swearing-in exercise, with Atik, Arocha and Agulu divisions expected to follow
Government conducted nationwide elections for village and parish as well as women committee leaders, in an exercise which started early last month after years without having elections for these categories.
