Residents of Patongo Town Council have raised serious concerns about increasing noise pollution in the area, particularly around oliga trading area. the noise, they say, mainly comes from loud music played by traders and nearby grinding mills, especially during market days.

Ocira Hellen, a resident of Oporot South Cell, expressed her frustration over the situation, noting that Tuesdays—when Oliga holds its weekly market—are particularly problematic as loud music attracts groups of youths who often get drunk and rowdy.

She contends that some of them end up beating people, a behaviour she says reflects a worrying level of moral decay in the community.

James, another resident from Akomo Village, echoed Hellen’s sentiments. He noted that the vendors who play loud music not only create noise disturbances but also pose a safety risk, as it becomes difficult to hear horns from approaching motorcycles or vehicles.

The residents are appealing to the Patongo Town Council to urgently intervene and regulate the use of public address systems and grinding mills in residential and commercial zones.

Efforts in the past have been made by local authorities on the issue but have not yielded positive results.

In response, Hon. Komakech Joseph, the LC3 Chairperson of Patongo Town Council, acknowledged the complaints and promised action. He said they are going to engage the traders and grinding mill operators to find a solution.

some of the traders however claim that it is very hard to restrict noise pollution in a fast growing town like patongo
