In a growing effort to combat the worsening effects of climate change, farmers in Agago district have begun embracing agroforestry practices through a community-led initiative spearheaded by The Environmental Conservation Trust in Uganda (ECOTRUST Uganda). The project, dubbed Pur Lonyo, which translates to “Farming is Wealth”, is aimed at empowering smallholder farmers to integrate tree planting with crop farming.

The initiative provides training on climate-resilient practices and supplies seedlings of fast-growing and indigenous tree species that offer both environmental and economic benefits. These efforts are not only aimed at improving soil quality and reducing erosion but also at enhancing food security and household incomes.

In Achol Pii Parish, Arum Subcounty, farmers are beginning to witness the positive outcomes of agroforestry. Improved soil fertility, reduced wind damage, and the restoration of previously degraded lands are among the reported benefits. Increased productivity and resilience to drought have also been observed as a result of integrating species such as white teak with traditional crops like maize, simsim and soy beans.

Florence Adong, a farmer in Achol Pii and a member of a local farmer group benefiting from the project, encouraged others to take up agroforestry. She noted its effectiveness in improving soil health, preventing erosion, and shielding crops from harsh climatic conditions.

In Kuywee Parish, Kuywee Subcounty, farmer Okello Isaac Newton reported that some community members have already begun earning income from their trees. Proceeds are being used to meet essential household needs such as school fees and farm inputs. However, he pointed out that many farmers remain uncertain about the appropriate tree species to plant alongside specific crops and called for more training to bridge the knowledge gap.

Local authorities in Agago have thrown their support behind the initiative. District leaders believe agroforestry could play a crucial role in reducing the impacts of climate change on agriculture, which is the primary source of livelihood for most households. Agago district LCV chairperson Leonard Ojok noted that if widely adopted, the practice could help transform the district’s economic landscape and ensure long-term sustainability.
