Police in Agago has registered more than 450 criminal cases since the beginning of the year, with murder and defilement topping the list. The police attribute this trend to recurring land and family-related conflicts, as well as school holiday periods that increase vulnerability among children.
The District Police Commander for Agago, SP Omar Kokole, said a large portion of the murder cases were a result of disputes over land ownership and unresolved family feuds. He also noted that most defilement cases occurred during school holidays when children are at home and unsupervised.
The police commander expressed concern over the rising number of such crimes and urged local leaders and parents to intensify conflict mediation efforts and community child protection.
Atim Pido Lucy, the Community Development Officer CDO of Patongo Town Council, believes the figures highlight a deeper social breakdown, particularly in handling family disputes. She emphasized the need for more community dialogue and civic education to reduce violent crime.
The police says it is working closely with stakeholders to strengthen crime prevention measures and improve early intervention, especially in areas prone to violence.
