The government has been urged to support communities in conserving natural seasonal waters for future use and environmental sustainability.
Speaking to journalists in Buyende District, Pastor Denis Muganza, the leader of Healing Miracle Church Kabukye, called on the government to introduce innovative measures to help communities protect swamps and preserve water, especially during the rainy season.
“The government should work hand in hand with the community to establish water catchment areas such as valley dams and wells. This will not only ensure water is stored for future use but also help in environmental conservation and the fight against climate change,” Pastor Muganza said.
He further advised farmers to adopt contour farming techniques to prevent soil erosion and ensure that rainwater is effectively utilised within their gardens rather than wasted.
Currently, the Busoga subregion is experiencing heavy rainfall, which is expected to continue until December. The rains have already caused significant damage to infrastructure, with several major roads including the Kamuli–Kaliri, Kamuli–Iganga, and Luuka roads rendered impassable, disrupting transport across Busoga North.

In a related development, Mrs. Namwase Naome, the Environmental Officer for Buyende District Local Government, said the district plans to sensitise communities on proper land use, particularly those cultivating in wetland areas.
“We want to engage communities in sustainable land management practices to reduce environmental degradation and promote responsible use of swamp resources,” Mrs. Namwase said.
